This ancient Roman spa and university city is the Oxford of France, with a large student population who study against a backdrop of classical buildings and ‘dreaming spires'. Birth and resting place of the world-renowned painter Paul Cezanne,it is steeped in history and has a wonderful ‘old town’ with quaint, narrow streets and pretty little squares, overlooked by the soaring Gothic Cathedral of St-Saveur. Aix has a thriving entertainment and cultural scene and is well known for its annual summer music and drama festival which takes place in the courtyard of the Archbishop’s Palace during July.
